Andrew Lack Urges Students to See Journalism as a Civic Responsibility

Veteran journalist and media executive Andrew Lack recently spoke at the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication during the event “Democracy in the Balance,” a discussion focused on journalism’s role in sustaining democratic dialogue.

In conversation with SJMC Director Kathleen Bartzen Culver, Lack shared insights from his decades-long career leading major news organizations including NBC News and Bloomberg Media. He emphasized that the core responsibility of journalism remains unchanged: reporting the truth and holding power accountable.

Lack also discussed the growing importance of local nonprofit journalism, particularly in communities that have become “news deserts.” His organization, Mississippi Today, has helped support investigative reporting across the American South.

Speaking to students, Lack stressed that strong reporting is essential for democracy and civic understanding. As he noted during the conversation, pursuing journalism today can be seen as a civic duty in an era when reliable information is increasingly vital.
